Muiscafé

Nestled in the heart of Sugamuxi, Muiscafe is a Sogamoso-based coffeehouse owned and operated by  Gonzalo Chaparro Monguí and Luz Elena Barrios. I first had the pleasure of meeting Gonzalo at the artisan fair in Plaza de la Villa, which takes place on the first Sunday of every month in Sogamoso. He kindly invited me to visit his cafe the next day, and I was thrilled to witness the entire coffee roasting process firsthand. It was clear to me that Gonzalo and Luz Elena take immense pride in their work, and they spare no effort to ensure that every bean is carefully selected by hand to guarantee exceptional quality. In addition to serving delicious coffee, Muiscafe is a vibrant and dynamic space to host community events  - everything from poetry readings to film screenings to artistic presentations. Gonzalo and Luz Elena create beautiful handicrafts with Muisca symbology such as earrings and coasters from used coffee grounds, demonstrating their commitment to sustainability and responsible business practices. Muiscafe is an important cultural hub that supports small-scale farmers in Boyacá and Muisca culture - one tinto at a time.
