Mariana Morris Romero

Mariana Morris Romero, known as Maya, is an artist from Sogamoso, Boyacá. She enjoys designing and crafting handmade pieces that not only reflect identity but also pay homage to the ancestors who skillfully crafted everything with their own hands. Her mission is to preserve these traditions and artistic endeavors. Maya takes pride in her roots, and many of her creations are influenced by the indigenous Muisca people, their paths, and sacred places infused with their magic and spirituality.

Maya draws inspiration from a territory of cultural wealth, where traditions are rooted in the experiences of individuals like grandparents and farmers. The primary influence on Maya's work is her family, including her mother, grandmothers, and other remarkable women and friends. Her partner, Chamox, and her children, Nyia and Ynuk, serve as her greatest inspirations, prompting a shift in her life's direction. This change is marked by her desire to take ownership of her life, time, and creative power. She finds joy in learning from them and cherishing creative moments together.

Being an independent artist comes with both advantages and disadvantages. Maya believes that artists in Boyacá have the capacity to create anything they envision; however, the challenge lies in reaching a broader audience. Limited spaces for cultural interaction often hinder the showcasing of diverse artistic expressions. Maintaining a balance between necessary tasks as a mother and creative pursuits has been a challenge for Maya. She especially appreciates the admiration of her creations by individuals of all ages, from children to adults.

For Maya, promoting culture is a means of remembering one's origins, understanding one's identity, and shaping aspirations. It is a form of ‘medicine’ for the land and its people, fostering an awareness of self-care and preservation. At Sumercé Artisans, we proudly showcase Maya’s earrings featuring colorful hummingbirds of Colombia.
